where can I find a 100% vegan restaurant in the Faithful City?

You don’t have too much choice if you are looking for 100% vegan restaurants in Worcester. Be the Change in the city centre fits the bill. I talk about Be the Change in my blog post vegan food in Worcester – identity crisis. The only other all-vegan restaurant I know of is the Firefly in Lowesmoor which I have not yet reviewed.

Many eateries describe themselves as vegan or vegetarian friendly. These places can offer a couple of non-meat options or they can have menus which feature vegan and vegetarian food as prominently as their meat dishes.

I remember, years ago, when vegans were virtually unheard of and vegetarians were seen as …… well, they were seen in many different ways! And when a vegetarian went out for a meal, they would often be offered a meat dish with the meat removed. Like so much, things have changed.

Worcester boasts a good selection of non-meat dishes. As I have found in my restaurant reviews, many of these dishes are wonderful. There is the odd disappointment as well but, fortunately, they are rare. The vegan Superfood Salad at the Bank House Hotel is a really nice, healthy and refreshing dish. The Menemen at the Coffee Warehouse on Foregate Street is hearty, healthy and vegetarian. A beautiful dish at Good Roots cafe is their Chickpea Omelette. A chickpea omelette may not sound so great, but it was good enough to get into my best dishes in Worcester blog. And close by, the Meeting Place cafe has a good choice of vegan and vegetarian dishes.

where can I eat vegan food in Worcester?

It would be good to say that there are many more independent restaurants in Worcester that offer a good selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes. However, there really aren’t that many. I don’t consider a restaurant to be vegan friendly if they offer only one vegan main course. A minimum of two vegan options are, to my mind, the minimum requirement.

Vegan-friendly restaurants that I’ll soon be reviewing include two in the city centre, Chesters and the Cardinal’s Hat. The latter specializes in “fresh, locally made, award-winning pies”. Importantly, I notice they offer a selection of six pie flavours, two of which are vegan. Further afield, Mackenzies in Malvern focus on burgers and have a great selection of vegan and vegetarian options.

I recently had a conversation with the head chef and restaurant manager of a local restaurant. I pointed out that their menu had only one vegan starter, one vegan main course, and no vegan desserts. They said they weren’t a vegan restaurant and didn’t focus on vegan food. If you are a restaurateur whose menu includes a good selection of vegan options, please let me know.

The Pasha Everest in St. John’s serves the usual vegetable dishes of balti, korma etc. They are currently reviewing their menu and it will be interesting to see if more vegetarian and vegan dishes are added. However, during a recent meal there, I was presented with a takeaway carton of Soya Kadia to try at home. Although the menu states it is a vegetarian dish, the owner assures me it is actually a vegan dish. The soya cubes marinated in special spices, cooked in thick sauce with herbs, tomato, onion, and capsicum worked very well. Along with the vegan roti we were given, three of us shared this dish for breakfast. And all three of us loved it. I am not a huge fan of soya, but this was tasty.

The following restaurants have been reviewed by me and all have a reasonable, or better, selection of vegan dishes. The Mason’s Arms, a lovely pub on the road to Martley, has a separate and quite impressive vegan menu. During my recent dinner at Anarkali, I was very impressed with both the selection of vegan dishes and the quality of the food.
