Cromwell's

Excellent Indian and Nepalese dishes

6 Malvern Road, Powick, Worcester, WR2 4QP

the restaurant

In the days when this restaurant was painted purple, I drove past many times and thought how tacky it looked. What sort of food would be served in a gaudy place like this?

One night a friend suggested we try the place. We did, We loved it. The quality of the food is high. The service is good. What’s not to like?

It looks like it was originally a public house. The inside is bright and clean. It is nicely decorated and furnished. And I do like a table made up with a table cloth.

After the purple phase came yellow. However, such is the restaurant’s reputation for quality food, perhaps the building’s colour doesn’t matter.

the food

This was, to my knowledge, the first restaurant on the west side of the city to offer both Indian and Nepalese dishes. Some of, perhaps all, the staff are from Nepal. I have tried a variety of the dishes here, but always seem to veer back towards my two favourites. For starters, after the poppadoms of course, I go for the Lamb Momo. According to the menu, “This is a traditional delicacy in Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan. Minced chicken or lamb filling in a crescent shaped [parcel] and cooked by steaming over a soup. Served with potato and sesame sauce.” Similar to Japanese Gyosa (steamed), but the Momo are slightly larger.

I rarely find a main dish that I enjoy more than their Special Mixed Tawa. Again, to quote the menu, “A combination of barbecued lamb, chicken and king prawns with ginger, garlic and onion in a medium thick sauce.” I am not keen on curries where every bite taste the same as the last. It is good to get different tastes from one forkful to the next. This dish is a real mix of flavours and textures.

Given what I have said above, you have probably guessed that I think the food at Cromwell’s is good. Couple this with them serving two of my favourite dishes and I love this place.
