Black & White breakfast review

good food, good service in a relaxed atmosphere

14 The Foregate, Worcester, WR1 3QD

the restaurant

Situated in the centre of Worcester, this cafe’s facade is classy and understated. The welcome my son and I received was warm and we chose a table – as usual, one by a window. The atmosphere was busy, but relaxed. A steady turnover of customers created a buzz, but it never got really busy and we felt relaxed for the duration of our meal – which we didn’t rush.

One negative was the menus. The breakfast menu was printed on paper, but not covered. The paper was a little tatty. A shame when it costs so little to print fresh menus on a home printer. Otherwise, the cafe was clean and nicely decorated. The toilets downstairs were modern and spotless.

There are many similarities between this cafe and Coffee Warehouse a couple of doors along. So why not try them both?

breakfast

Egg Florentine

It was a hot morning so, before ordering food, we asked for two fruit smoothies which were freshly prepared. We both opted for Tropical – peach, passion fruit, and mango. The smoothies were cold, fresh, delicious, refreshing, and I could have drunk a pint of it.

Then onto the Egg Florentine which we shared. Soft poached free range eggs, wilted baby spinach, oak smoked salmon, toasted muffin, and Hollandaise sauce. The presentation was good and the only very small criticism was that the spinach made the muffin a bit soft. Not a big issue. It was cooked well and tasted great.

Vegetarian Venture

The Vegetarian Venture included free range poached eggs, grilled halloumi, sautéed mushrooms, baby spinach, roasted tomato, hash browns, baked beans, served with toast. This vegetarian breakfast was lovely. The components worked well together, and I thouroughly enjoyed it. As I detest baked beans, something more imaginative would have made the dish even better – perhaps an onion relish. One part of the meal was abolutely superb – the hash browns were beautiful. Possibly the best hash browns I have ever tasted.

The Frenchy

The Frenchy was Billy’s choice. Clasic French toast, crispy bacon, poached eggs, and Canadian maple syrup. I do like menus to include dishes that are a bit different. Billy enjoyed this meal. I tried a bit, but not being a fan of maple syrup, it was never going to please my tastebuds.

around and about Black & White

As with the nearby Coffee Warehouse, Black & White is so very central that it is ideal for many purposes. It is close to the shops, Foregate Street railway station, and it is barely a couple of minutes’ walk from the Odeon cinema. And if you are visiting Worcester horse races for the day – why not start with a lovely breakfast here?

facilities

parking

The restaurant does not have a car park. Nearby are CrowngateSilver Street, and Sansome Walk car parks.

disabled access

Thre is no ramp at the entrance, so presumably wheelchairs can access the cafe. However, there is no disbled access to the toilets. Given the age of the building and the fact it is split over two floors, I don’t see how they could offer disabled access to the toilets.

take-aways

Take-away food is available.
