a review of Land - a plant-focused restaurant in Birmingham
When my mum told me we were having dinner at Land I thought it sounded interesting. She told me it was a plant based tasting menu and almost every review was five star. My previous tasting menu experience was enjoyable because I tried things I would never usually try, so I was looking forward to this one. As a vegetarian its nice to go to restaurants that focus on meat free dishes.
So now onto Land. We arrived and were very quickly seated to a table. It was smaller than most restaurants with about 8-10 tables. It was a pleasant atmosphere and the staff were always ready to help. There was an open kitchen meaning you could look over and see what the chefs were cooking, which was very interesting.
There were lots of different drinks on offer, I had a pineapple juice which was sweet and delicious, mummy had a cocktail which she looked happy with. They only serve a tasting menu, so everyone in the restaurant was having the same dishes.
Overall I rate it five star, it was a lovely experience and reasonably priced (apparently).
starters
The first two courses were described on the menu as snacks. First up was mini mushroom tarts with celeriac mouse and cep powder. They were very creamy and had just the right balance of the different flavours, the pastry had a nice crunch to it. Second was cauliflower beignets, this was cauliflower florets coated in batter. They were soft and tasty.
main courses
Next were the main courses. Starting with rice porridge with confit red onions and thyme. The onions gave a sweet taste complementing the creamy rice porridge. Rice porridge is similar to risotto, but wasn’t as buttery. This dish was one of my favourites, but all of them were delicious.
This was followed by butternut squash terrine with sunflower ‘cream cheese’. The butternut squash was soft and went well with the cream cheese and a hint of chilli.
After this was roast potato in a dashi broth with samphire. The roast potato was slightly harder than I expected, but still was delicious and worked well with the broth. The grapes on top were also nice.
The aubergine that followed came with massaman, peanut and rice noodles, even though I don’t usually like aubergine this place was so good that even this tasted great.
The final savoury dish was pan-fried carrot, almond sauce and coriander pesto, by this point we’d had a lot to eat. I enjoyed it but was quite full as I’d eaten all the other courses.
desserts
Now onto the desserts, poached pears in a pear puree. This was delicious and creamy
Finally was beetroot cake with cherries and caramelised oat ice-cream. This wasn’t to my taste, but my mum very helpfully finished it off for me.
