Pasha Everest dinner review

beautiful Indian & Nepalese cuisine

56, St John's, Worcester, WR2 5AJ

the restaurant

In the heart of St John’s, on the west side of the river, is a restaurant I have been visiting for thirty years. Originally the Pasha Indian restaurant, its wooden facade served it well until it began to look dated many years ago. Some may remember the remedy – paint the wooden facade silver. A shock to me and many locals. However, with new people now plying their trade here, the renamed Pasha Everest now looks classy in its new coat of black paint.

The welcome when my eldest son and I arrived for our Pasha Everest dinner review was warm. We were offered a table by the window, or one further inside the restaurant. We chose the window seat. The table linen was immaculate and the menus new. A good start.

There are both Indian and Nepalese dishes on the menu. Strangely, there is also an Indo-Chinese section including dishes such as noodles. I asked the owner if he or the restaurant had a Chinese connection. He said no. They include these dishes just to give more choice. It doesn’t work for me. Whilst there are many who may like the larger choice of food, for me it confuses the restaurant’s identity.

The service was excellent. I asked questions of three of the waiters and all answered patiently and explained the dishes in question.

poppadoms

Four plain poppadoms, please. How many times have I said that? The poppadoms were fine, and the sauces very good. The mango chutney was more red in colour than usual, but it tasted just right. The mint yoghurt was particularly tasty. The red chutney was not as spicy as that which I am often served in other restaurants. I prefer it a little spicier, but I am sure many would prefer the less spicy version.

starters

I chose the Prawn Puri. The texture of the puri was a combination of fluffy and crispy, and the generous prawn filling was packed with taste. One of the better prawn puris I have eaten.

Billy tried the Chilli Paneer, a homemade Nepalese cheese, stir-fried with spring onion, mixed peppers, chilli & garlic tossed together in a dark soy sauce, Nepalese-Chinese fusion. Billy thoroughly enjoyed this dish. I had a good forkful and it was delicious. When I have cooked panner at home, it tends to be the same texture throughout. However, this was crunchy on the outsire, and melt-in-the-mouth-gorgeous on the inside. The slightly spicy, Chinese-inspired sticky sauce was beautiful. And despite what I said earlier about not liking the inclusion of an Indo-Chinese selection of food, the Chilli Paneer was possibly the best dish of the meal.

main course

Billy’s Lamb Jalfrezi was tasty, he said. This is a dish I used to eat frequently but, feeling quite full already, I didn’t try any. Billy enjoyed it.

I ordered the Garlic Chilli Chicken – tender baby chicken, tossed in fresh crushed ginger and garlic, pan fried with fresh green chillies, and dressed with coriander and tomato juliennes. This sauce was quite thick and fairly sweet. I enjoyed the dish. However, I wouldn’t order it again as it just wasn’t to my taste. Nothing wrong with it, and I’m glad I tried it. Just a bit sweet and rich for me.

We ordered pilau rice and some garlic naan. As the food was brought to the table, we got a waft of garlic. It smelt beautiful.

around and about Pasha Everest, St John's

If you fancy a pre-dinner drink, then there are a couple of hostelries within 80 yards of the restaurant. The Bell Inn is a traditional pub, popular with locals, with friendly service and occasional live music. At the Bull Baiters you will find no music or TV. What they offer in their medieval premises is “small brewery produced real ales and ciders”.

facilities

parking

The restaurant does not have its own car park. However, there is limited on-street parking opposite and in the surrounding roads and a small car park 80 yards away by the Citroen Garage. There is a large car park at Sainsbury’s close by, but I’m not sure if you can park there for free or for how long.

disabled facilities

The restaurant has disabled access. Although they do not have exclusive disabled toilets, the restaurant say the toilets are used regularly by a wheelchair-bound customer.

children

High chairs are available.

take-aways

Take-away food is available.
