best dishes in Worcester

stand-out food from our independent cafés and restaurants

best dishes in Worcester

I love cafés and restaurants that push the boat out when planning their menu. The opportunity to try something different is very appealing. Of equal pleasure is finding a dish that is quite common, but that is done so well that you remember it. Either way, when I find these dishes that stand out, they will be added to my list of best dishes in Worcester.

Superfood Salad - Bank House Hotel

Not a dish that would usually appeal to me; in fact, Christina ordered it. But I had quite a few forkfuls and it was very good. Christina loved it.

This dish consists of quinoa, spinach, soya beans, pomegranate seeds, pumpkin seeds, avocado relish, tenderstem broccoli and asparagus with lemon sherbet dressing. Lots of seeds, whilst healthy, suggest to me a dry meal – possibly the bottom of a budgie’s cage. On the contrary, this dish is anything but dry. This cold dish has an interesting mix of flavours and is refreshing. Eaten on this occasion in December, it would also be ideal in the hot summer months. It is super healthy and, given the portion size, this would be fine as a main course for many.

Borek - Hangar Café

The Borek consisted of two filo pastries, hummus, and tortilla, and is quite a filling lunch. The pastry was light and had a slightly spicy coating which gave it a very mild but pleasurable kick. The spinach and cheese worked well. The salad, humus and tortilla are a perfect accompaniment to the pastries.

You may wonder why I have included this dish in my ‘best dishes in Worcester’ post as it is, essentially, a couple of pastries. The reason is that I thoroughly enjoyed this dish and it is something new that I haven’t tried before. The pastries were lovely, and I liked the mix of tastes and textures on the plate. It is a meal I will remember for some time!

Special Mixed Tawa - Cromwell's

This Nepalese dish ticks all the boxes for me. It is moderately spicy – could be slightly spicier for me – and the rich sauce is very much to my taste. The dish is a combination of barbecued lamb, chicken and king prawns with ginger, garlic and onion in a medium thick sauce.

I find that with many curry dishes every forkful tastes the same and there is no variety. However, the Special Mixed Tawa encompasses a variety of tastes, and not just through the three main ingredients. Presented in the pan, this dish is filling and one I choose time and time again. Some eat it with naan, I prefer pilau rice.

Abbie’s Homemade Lotus Biscoff Cheesecake - Tap House

Should I include a cheesecake in my ‘best dishes in Worcester’ blog. After all, it is just a cheesecake and the Tap House isn’t in Worcester. In fact, it has a Dudley postcode. But it is only a 10-mile drive from Worcester in the village of Hartlebury. And the decision to include it was helped by the quality and the price.

Now let’s talk cheesecake. Abbie’s Homemade Lotus Biscoff Cheesecake wouldn’t have been my first choice. Cheesecake for me is best in vanilla. The other cheesecake on the menu was Cookie and Cream, which is definitely not for me.

So Lotus Biscoff it was. The base was spot on for my liking. A combination of crumbly with some moisture. The topping was thick, very tasty, and perfectly smooth. One portion of this well-presented dessert could never be enough!

There is lots of excellent cheesecake in Worcester’s restaurants and I do love cheesecake. Nevertheless, the Tap House was spot on and at £4.25 the combination of quality and price earn the dish the right to be included in this blog post.

Menemen - Coffee Warehouse

Another dish served in the pan is this tasty, hearty, healthy dish at the Coffee Warehouse in the centre of Worcester.

This traditional Turkish dish has many different recipes. Coffee Warehouse used poached eggs (some use scrambled) on spinach, red onions, peppers, and garlic. It was served with toast, although the menu on their website says baguette.

The waitress asked if I would like it spicy. Only say yes if you really like spicy food as when they say spicy, they mean spicy.

This dish looks amazing. I liked every aspect of this dish, in particular the contrast of flavours. This dish is on the breakfast menu. However, it is quite filling and would be suitable as a lunch dish.

Chickpea Omelette - Good Roots

This dish is a chickpea omelette with roasted plum tomato, kale, harissa-spiced peppers and onions topped with hummus. I enjoyed this vegan meal for lunch, but it would be equally suitable as a breakfast dish.

As I mention above, I like dishes that have a variety of tastes. This dish ticks that box perfectly. The tastes and textures combine to make a thoroughly enjoyable meal. A filling, healthy dish which was quite spicy.

Worcester Blue - Burger Shop Worcester

This burger contains a beef patty, Worcester Blue cheese, beer onions, roast garlic mayo, ketchup, baby gem, and an organic bun.

I cannot add much to the review of this burger as I chose the Burger Shop Classic. However, Christina ordered the Worcester Blue and she said it is the best burger she has ever eaten. What else is there to say?
