Grounded Kitchen Korean restaurant review
tasty Korean food in the city centre

the restaurant
Where do I start with this Korean restaurant review? I’ll start by saying that the food at the Grounded Kitchen was gorgeous.
It is immediately apparent on entry that this is a casual dining restaurant. Not somewhere to take your loved one for a romantic meal. Other than one table, which we grabbed, it is stools and high bars. Ordering and payment is from the table via an app. Whilst app ordering is not for me, it seems the younger generation are quite comfortable with these apps. But, that’s a discussion for another time.
The restaurant was spotless, the service we did receive was efficient and friendly, and the restaurant is a welcome and refreshing addition to the city centre.

Despite three visits to Korea in the 1990s, I didn’t try bao, the Korean steamed buns. They are, it turns out, light and soft and come with various fillings. Salmon for me, and beef for my friend, Anthony. The beef bao consisted of roasted Angus beef, crispy fried onions, pickled mooli, coriander, spring onions, fresh chilli, sesame seeds and Jeju sauce. For my dish it was marinated salmon, Gochujang, crispy fried onions, pickled mooli, coriander, spring onions, sesame seeds and Jeju sauce.
I choose a cold blue butterfly drink – a blue herbal latte made with butterfly pea flowers. Made using plant based coconut milk. There are people who will love this drink, but not me. Anthony was pleased with his choice of ceremonial matcha – made using a plant based coconut milk. Available hot or cold and served with coconut milk. There is a good selection of quenchers, frappes, lattes and other soft drinks.

Anthony thought his dish was delicious. I thought mine was delicious. So we were both very happy.
My Gochujang spicy mushroom was, without doubt, spicy. It was also a great variety of tastes and textures. Almost a new taste with each chop-stickful. The ingredients were rice, spinach, carrots, beetroot, peppers, avocado, Korean kimchi, lime, coriander, spring onions, sesame seeds and fresh chilli.
Anthony’s dish was bulgogi chicken. Rice, spinach, carrots, beetroot, peppers, avocado, lime, coriander, red cabbage, spring onions, sesame seeds, and fresh chilli. Although a lot of the ingredients were common across both dishes, each dish had its very own over-riding flavour. He thought his dish was excellent and I have never seen him enjoy a dish so much. I was quite thirsty later that night, so it is possible that the dishes were heavy on salt. However, that wasn’t noticeable when eating them.
We would certainly have these dishes again. In reality, we would want to work our way through the rest of the menu.
