dinner at the Himalayan

warm welcome, excellent food

the restaurant

The Himalayan isn’t the most attractive restaurant from the outside. That’s stating the obvious. However, the welcome and the food were excellent. A small restaurant serving Nepalese and Indian dishes at very reasonable prices.

starters

I started with lamb bhutuwa, a Nepalese dish of pieces of lamb stir fried with chopped garlic, chilli, tomatoes, onions and fresh coriander. A lovely dish. Dan’s onion bhajis were, he said, very tasty, cooked well when sometimes they can be a bit wet. Good value too.

Of the prawn puri Sam was full of praise. “Excellent. I have had a few over the years and this one was as good as any. Fresh, good flavour to the sauce and a nice kick to it too.”

main courses

Special mixed tawa is a favourite of mine. Chicken tikka, lamb, king prawn cooked with fresh garlic, tomato, fresh herbs and spices. This dish was good, but I have a very slight preference for the version served at Cromwell’s in Powick.

The vegetable madras was described by Dan as, “right heat, not overpowering, could still taste the veg and naan bread was tasty too.” For Sam, his murg musslam, “was lovely. The chicken was tender and the sauce again well flavoured with a reasonable spice. The pilau rice was well cooked too.” This dish is chicken breast cooked with mince lamb meat, fresh herbs and boiled egg.
