Hangar café lunch review

Persian café serving good food in the city centre

Reindeer Court, Mealcheapen Street, Worcester WR1 2DP

the café

My Hangar Café lunch review came about by accident. I visited the café in Reindeer Court, a small shopping arcade accommodating a range of independent shops, for breakfast. However, nice though their breakfast menu looked, I was drawn to their lunch menu. A variety of dishes popular in the Balkans, the Middle East, and Central Asia. The café is ideally situated, not only among some excellent independent shops, but also very close to the main Worcester shopping areas.

As I was eating by myself, I chose a window table which gave me a good view of people going about their shopping in Reindeer Court. The style of the café is eclectic which gives it a very informal and relaxed feel. The way the tables are laid is a bit old fashioned, but reminded me a lot of a traditional restaurant we ate at in the Albanian capital, Tirana, a couple of years ago.

the Hangar Café food

The waitress was very friendly and helpful and, though it was only 9.30 in the morning, said it was no problem choosing from the lunch menu. My coffee arrived in a large cup and, given my dislike for  lukewarm coffee, I was pleased that it was piping hot. The milk was supplied in a separate pot, as it should be! The dish that caught my eye was the Borek Plate. A dish of filo pastry filled with spinach and cheese, served with humus, tortilla, and green salad. A close second was the Sucuk Plate – spicy beef sausages with pitta, tomato, and vegetable dip. Purely to sample more than one dish for my review, I ordered both.

Borek

The Borek Plate had two filo pastries which, along with the humus and tortilla, made it quite a filling lunch. The pastry was light and had a slightly spicy coating which gave it a very mild but pleasurable kick. The spinach and cheese were a great combination. These homemade pastries are available to take away and I shall buy some the next time I am passing by. The salad, humus and tortilla were a perfect accompaniment to the pastries.

Sucuk

I did enjoy the Sucuk Plate, although on top of the first dish, I struggled to finish what would be a filling dish in its own right. There was a generous portion of sausages, nicely spiced and with a lovely tang that I have never before tasted. The vegetable dip and the tomatoes provided a good contrast to the spice of the sausages, and the pitta bread was good.

cakes

It has to be said that I did make a huge mistake. Had I visited the counter before sitting down at my table, I would have seen the gorgeous, and quite large, variety of cakes on offer. Many of the cakes are made on the premises and there are usually some traditional Persian cakes available. And having seen these cakes, I would have ensured that I left room for at least one after my lunch. As it was, I was so stuffed I shall have to return one day for afternoon tea and cake.

the drinks

Where do we start. The usual range of coffees and teas, including a Turkish tea. Hot chocolate – coconut, mint, orange, white, peanut butter, salted caramel, and strawberry. Apparently, the hot chocolates are all available as a vegan option.

Winter specials include teas of the flavours apple, pomegranate, hibiscus, or rose. Choose from these lattes on the Winter Specials menu: gingerbread, eggnog, pumpkin spiced, or turmeric chai.

The Healthy Mocktails menu is limited to three choices and there are five choices from the Virgin Mocktails menu. They also have an interesting Power of Colours drinks menu. One of these options is the Orange, Peach, Carrot, and Kiwi.

Now we move on to the smoothies with a choice of fruity smoothies, veggie smoothies, and breakfast smoothies which are prepared with oats, honey, and fruits.

Of the eight freshly made milkshakes, I think my choice would be the Kiwi & Mango.

And if that isn’t enough choice for you, they also have a frappe, iced chocolate, homemade lemonade, and yet more!

things to do near the Hangar café

The first thing that springs to mind is shopping. Where better to pause for refreshment than in the relative tranquility of Reindeer Court in the heart of the shopping area?

The Hangar Café is probably no more than a 10-minute walk from Worcester Cathedral. Both the Vue cinema and the Odeon are about a five-minute walk away – albeit in opposite directions.

The café is close to three museums including The Commandery. This is a wonderful museum and the site of the royalist headquarters during the the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Greyfriar’s House and Garden and the Tudor House Museum – two museums offering a glorious glimpse into Worcester’s past.

Reindeer Court leads out onto New Street, one of the oldest areas in Worcester with much period architecture. This then brings you to the equally historic Friar Street.

Another nearby museum is the Museum of Royal Worcester. This is a fascinating delve into the industrial heritage of the region. And, of course, it has a presentation of the world’s largest collection of Worcester Porcelain.
