Wayland's Yard breakfast review
stylish breakfast in the city centre
6 Foregate St, Worcester, WR1 1DB
the restaurant
Two people told me that they were surprised I was doing a Wayland’s Yard breakfast review as, they said, the place is for younger people! I would say that is rubbish, although I was the oldest in there – and I’m not old.
The welcome we received was warm and genuine. The young lady told us where the menus were and invited us to take a seat. The restaurant is casually decorated and the atmosphere was good – I find the bustle of people to be quite invigorating. We, my son Billy and I, sat at the window table overlooking Foregate Street and the Worcester Whitehouse hotel.
You need to order online, so out came my phone and I selected the drinks and food we wanted. It got to the payment section and the app prompted me for my address etc. I don’t do that. A waitress passed by our table and said we could order at the counter – which we did.
The drinks arrived soon after ordering. However, the food arrived at the table 22 minutes after ordering which I don’t find acceptable for a breakfast. The waitress apologized for the delay as she brought the dishes to the table, so I assume the delay is not normal. Other than this, we enjoyed our breakfast and found Wayland’s Yard to be casual, welcoming, and to serve well-presented, tasty food.

drinks
Billy’s orange juice was fine and he didn’t make comment on it. I had filter coffee. It has to be said that it was just perfect for me.
One Pan Hash, Halloumi & Mushroom
I opted for the Halloumi & Mushroom One Pan Hash with pan fried potatoes, fire roasted red peppers, spinach, toast, topped with poached egg. There are three versions of the ‘one pan hash’. The other two are Chorizo & Halloumi and Mushroom & Avo. Between the three versions, there is a meat, vegetarian, and vegan option so everyone has been catered for.
The one pan hash was very tasty. The mushrooms were plentiful and their taste came through well. This dish is similar to a Menemen or Shakshuka. It was served with a slice of bread, but two slices would have suited me better. Especially so as it is a dish with ample sauce to mop up.
I would certainly have this dish again and would like to try the Chorizo & Halloumi next time.
Fried Chicken Crumpets
The fried chicken crumpets consist of cornflake fried chicken, crispy bacon, egg dipped crumpets, chilli jam, coffee maple, chilli, herbs. This was Billy’s choice and I was quite jealous as the presentation was good and it looked really nice. Billy enjoyed this dish and found it to be cooked well and tasty. He said the coffee maple syrup wouldn’t be his first choice. However, he made two further comments – that the coffee taste was stronger than he thought it would be and he liked it.
around and about Wayland's Yard
As with the nearby restaurants Coffee Warehouse and Black & White, Wayland’s Yard is so very central that it is ideal for many purposes. It is close to the shops, Foregate Street railway station, and it is barely a couple of minutes’ walk from the Odeon cinema. And if you are visiting Worcester horse races for the day – why not start with a lovely breakfast here?
